Especially when the headline feature is that its the best Monster Hunter clone on the PlayStation 4.None of that screams mainstream success in the West, but nevertheless this is one of the of the best home console remasters of recent months. To be honest its also one of the only ones theyve ever done, but it does show that they have at least some willingness to play dirty.Monster Hunter was the catalyst for the PSPs success in Japan and its absence has been a root cause of the PS Vitas relative failure.
This though is an enhanced re-release of Toukiden: The Age Of Demons from last year (well, 2013 in Japan) with Cross-Save and Cross-Play compatibility with the PS Vita meaning you can swap between both versions as if theyre the same game. The game is by Dynasty Warriors makers Omega Force, who have already dabbled in this area before with games like Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce. It swaps dinosaur-like monsters for supernatural ones but otherwise sticks very close to Monster Hunters template of using co-op allies to team-up against much larger foes. Its so generic it couldve been ripped from the cut scenes of any number of role-players from the last few decades. The use of Japanese mythology is relatively interesting, but it all just boils down to you being a chosen one protecting humanity from demons. For better or worse Kiwami adds more plot and characters, but its still just more of the same. This is an especially important feature for the West, where competent allies are likely to be few and far between. Thats a real disappointment considering the game is now on PlayStation 4 but in exchange the graphics are better than ever, with the boss monsters in particular being genuinely impressive in terms of both size and detail. Originally there were six categories of weapons ranging from long bow to gauntlets but now theres even more with the addition of firearms, naginata and kanabo. And importantly theres a proper lock-on feature that helps limit any problems with the camera. The mitama system allows you to assign different modifiers and special moves to each of the face buttons, which can then be used to create specific attacks for each weapon class. So, for example, you can use the speed mitama for faster sword attacks or the deceit mitama to poison enemies with a ranged weapon. Its still not the worlds deepest combat system but together with the ability to target, and often slice off completely, enemy limbs it does feel subtlety but noticeably different from its rivals. But theres still an issue with enemy and mission variety, and although Kiwami adds more its not enough to overcome the sometimes suffocating levels of dj vu. The new content is relatively substantial and it does actually attempt to address issues with the original version. Regardless of whether being the best Monster Hunter clone on home consoles is something you care about this is a good enough game that everyone should give it a chance. Throwaway story and a less intricately constructed world than Monster Hunter.
